This is Teddy's story: He was adopted by a couple when he was a puppy through the Vet who handles all the SPCA animals. He was a tiny ball of fluff, just cute as could be. He grew up to be a beautiful "Benji" type dog, sweet, friendly and in love with everyone. Sounds great doesn't it !! Well Teddy is now 2 years old and the couple finally figured out the Teddy is "DEAF" and now they don't want him. They brought him back to the Vet and said he's deaf and we don't want to deal with it and he's all yours.....good bye !! So now Teddy is living at the Vet hospital instead of his home with the big back yard......... hoping someone will want him and love him just as he is.
Teddy is: Neutered male. 2 years old, House broken
Heart worm negative , On Heartgard and Frontline Shots UTD , Will be micro chipped
Great with other dogs, cats and kids, Very sweet, playful and loving
And deaf.
Presently in Mississippi

EXERCISE - DISIPLINE - AFFECTION   Does this phrase mean anything to you?
It does me, That's the way I've been living since I was saved from a chain about 1 ˝ years ago. Hi My name is RUSTY. I am currently looking for a Family with a strong dedication to helping a special needs dog. We'll discuss that part later.
I'm 2 years old, about 68 pounds red colored with black highlights (skin and lips) Since I was rescued,
I've learned to sit, lie-down, stay, wait ,OK, no ,and That's not yours. Were working on more every day. I walk on a lose leash (I've found its more comfortable that way.) I have already got a microchip (Home Again).I'm not food aggressive, in fact, one of my cats sometimes eats out of my bowl WHILE I'M EATING. I haven't meet a dog, cat, horse, or person that I didn't like. I'm especially found of KIDS. I love to be petted. My person says I would be a good therapy dog because I'm the right height to lay my head on a persons lap, that's sitting in a wheel-chair. I know it probably sounds like I bragging but I'm hoping that my good points will help out weigh my special needs.
Now about that. Since about the first of September 2007 I've started having seizures. I've had 8 episodes. That's what we call them, because there's also about 1 hour of what we call recovery time. I'm not conscious of what's going on at the time. (My person can explain it better. ) Here's the issue, They think I could be on medication for the rest of my life. I need my medicine twice a day. ( About 12 hrs apart)The vet says it needs to be within the same hour each day. She also said that if its not close to the same time each day, it could cause me to have seizures. My person lives alone, with an odd work schedule. (she hasn't told me yet, but I think the cost of the medication might also be a problem.) So, needless to say, I need to find a very responsible and devoted family that is willing to accept my difficulties, and also be able to afford my medication. I take my meds easily,( maybe because she hides it in a little piece of cheese.)
My person really wants to do the right thing. She promised that there was someone out there for me. I'm looking forward to proving her right. I may be what you call High Maintenance", but I'm planning to make it up with LOVE!    Stacey Tarr

My name is Schroeder. I am a male rottie mix , approximately 2 years old. I weigh about 60 pounds. I am a charming type of guy who likes dogs, and kids, but prefer a home with no cats. I only need some attention from a new family to make me happy. I am very handsome, smart and wise beyond my years. I need some work on my basic training, but truly am a pleaser, so I will learn quickly. I wonder how I ended up living here at the shelter, but have never come up with an answer. I am hoping for a family who will cherish my funny smile and will over look the fact that I have a minor problem called Epilepsy . My medication is very cheap, so please do not let that scare you away from coming to meet me. "The Marlie's Fund" can help pay for my medication, if you need help. I crave nothing more then to be your best friend, won’t you allow me to be that? Please contact Terrilyn at ttilley1@tampabay.rr.com Or call her at 941-238-7810

When Susie was a small puppy, only 4 weeks old... She was used as pitbull bait for fighting. She was thrown in with 2 pitbulls, and laid screaming as her two back legs were chewed off. She was left for dead, terribly drained of blood, energy, and spirit.

She was found, nearly dead. The rescuers rushed her to the nearest animal hospital, and the vet was able to save her. But barley. It took weeks for her to get her energy and strength back. She grew up, into a somewhat normal, traumatized puppy. Because of her past...she has some animal aggression. She is extremely food aggressive around other dogs, and doesn't like small dogs. Everything else about her is perfect~
She has a wheel chair, and a fake leg, and she does get around very well. She is 3 years old, and has been to many homes, and has been rejected too many times.
Nobody wants her. She is alone, waiting for a home. Unloved.
She is just the reject dog, the messed up dog. What she is really..is the wonderful spirit, who has been drained of all life. She needs a permanent home. Or a rescue that can find her a permanent him. PLEASE... If you can rescue her..,
She has experienced unbearable pain, heart wrenching betrayal, and is now giving up hope as something as simple as a hug. Can you change that for her?

Hello, My name is Lisa . I rescued a little guy off the street and he needs help.  There is no telling how long he has been out on the street, I did all the things that I could think of to do, I put up signs, put an ad in the Sac Bee, Craigslist.  I have had not response.  This little guy is about 10-12 lbs I would say he is 15 plus years old, he is almost blind, he hears pretty well, I know he needs medical attention, he has a bad cough (not like kennel cough) this is more like an asthma cough in humans.  He breaths very heavy shot breaths. Since I have had him his energy level is up.  I am unable at this time to get him the medical help i'm sure he needs.  I was really hoping that one of you rescue groups out there could take him.  I do not want to take him to the SPCA.  I have attached a couple of pictures of him.  I have been wanting to give him a bath and clean him up but I was afraid that he might get sicker than he is if he gets cold.
Will one of you please help this little guy!!  Please email me or call me 916-912-7496  LBRESHEARS2003@comcast.net

I work with a volunteer group in northern NJ that medically helps animals from the Bergen County Animal Shelter in Teterboro NJ for animals they can't afford to treat.  Buster is a 3 year old, neutered,  Shepherd/Akita mix who was hit by a car and brought to the shelter.  FOCAS, the volunteer group, paid for his physical therapy at a specialist hospital for over 5 weeks but his time is up.  He only improved slightly and needs a sling and two people to help him walk.  He eliminates outside but is 79 pounds and just a love.  Everyone at the hospital  loves him.    We don't want to bring him to the shelter because they will put him down.  Please, Please help.  VICKY CASTRONOVO dogdays1@verizon.net>

JD was rescued from a shelter.  He is an adorable deaf purebred Jack Russell Terrier.  He's a young and lively dog and would make a wonderful family pet. JD has been completely vetted and is up to date on all his shots.  He got a clean bill of health from the vet.     Please contact Diane yi_pie@yahoo.com

Mercy is sweet and lovable but older and a hound...two qualities that disqualify her for adoption around here.  Again, I've spent hundreds of dollars having her hernia repaired, spaying her, and having her vaccinated. Se is in Wytheville, Virginia.  contact Ruthie Murray <petsnperil@yahoo.com>

BlackJack is the sweetest boy ever but no one wants to take a dog that is deformed in the hind quarters, anticipating future medical costs.  The low cost spay/neuter van locally will not operate on him because he isn't "normal" but I'll get with another vet to get that done, as I have on the other two.  He was actually rescued from a local hoarder.  He had mange over a large part of his body and his back end never developed like his front.  He has almost a "pigeon-toe" stance.  He is a loving boyHe is in Wytheville, Virginia.  contact Ruthie Murray <petsnperil@yahoo.com>

Robin is neurotic and though very sweet, no one is willing to adopt her with the associated problems that she has. She is a red merle heeler.  When I pulled her, I had a rescue that was going to take her.  I went to pick her up and was surprised when the ACO actually loaded her into my van.  I found out why.  They had had lots of fun watching her chase her tail continually while in the shelter.  What they didn't tell me was that she had caught it and literally chewed the tip off!  She was bleeding everywhere.  Naturally, I couldn't send her to the rescue in that condition.  I took her to my vet and we decided that it would be best to dock her tail so she couldn't catch it.  I had that done and had her spayed.  She still chases imaginary things that she thinks is after her.  I have her on a medication that is supposed to help with the anxiety and it calms her a little. I've spent over $600 getting her tail docked, spayed, vaccinated, and medicated.  She is currently kenneled in an 8x8 enclosure and that isn't the way that I want her to spend her life.  Unfortunately, I don't have a choice. She is in Wytheville, Virginia.  contact Ruthie Murray <petsnperil@yahoo.com>

Ticket is our little hearing and vision impaired Mini Aussie puppy that needs a new home. Ticket is about 3 mos old now and is doing very well in his foster home. He is learning to learn - primarily through "touch" training and from watching and playing with the other dogs in the family. He is an active participant in the family and is becoming more attentive to people every day. He is very active and is sighted in one eye, allowing him to move freely about the house and yard, with supervision, of course. He's happy and quite well socialized for a little guy who was taken from his momma and dumped at a shelter at five weeks of age - he and his siblings were to be euthanized. He was pulled, but not given much interaction with people until about eight weeks when he was accepted into MARS. In his foster home, he plays well with kids and adults and other dogs. When he gets rambunctious, the youngest of the family's dogs corrects him with a push or a touch on his body and Ticket seems to settle right down. He is fine in a crate, but will whine a bit when his primary care-giver leaves his sight. He loves to play, but also finds time for serious cuddling. He is being house-trained, taught to walk on a leash along with other basic, puppy appropriate commands such as sit and down. Come is a bit harder as he cannot hear - perhaps a vibrating collar or other clever device would be a useful addition when he is in his Forever Home. Visit our website at www.miniaussierescue.org and download an Adopter Information form if you think you can provide Ticket with the loving home that he deserves.  James Allen <jallen07@snet.net>

I have a 3 yr old black lab who is blind. She has cataracts on both eyes. I don't have the means to have her eyes fixed. I also take care of 3 small grandchildren and I'm afraid that they will startle the dog and she will bite them. They do not understand about her "Bonnie" not being able to see them. She has always been exceptionally good with them. Bonnie also has skin/allergy problems and at times chews her skin off leaving exposed places on her. I also worry about this around the kids.
I emailed one place and they were going to list her, so I don't know if this is the same place or not.
Bonnie is a very loving, good dog and I really want to find her a forever home with someone who will take care of her, maybe even have her eyes fixed. I am attaching a picture. I live in Huffman, Texas.
Sincerely, Sarah Wallace swallace57@verizon.net

"Eddie" is our special need brindle and white puppy.  He was the first born, feet first, with a lot of help.  Charlie, the mother, had the rest of the litter by C-section.  When Eddie was born, he suffered from lack of oxygen and now can't walk without rolling over.  He can take a few steps if he is going slow, but if he is excited, (which he is still a puppy) he tumbles over.  Eddie will need a wheel-chair and a loving family that knows how to take care of special needs pets. He acts like a regular puppy and he can control when he goes to the bathroom.  He does use the newspapers right now and he can eat and drink by himself. He will only go to an approved home.  If interested in loving Eddie, please call Sundie Reedy at 479-738-1993 or 417-343-6655--   Sundie Reedy <trvlrsboxers@yahoo.com>

This is Gem! She is a Chocolate Labrador Retriever who is mixed with Smooth coated Collie or possibly Terrier. She is between 2 and 3 yrs old (as of 10/20). She is really cute and has a charming look to her. She weighs about 60 lbs, but needs to gain some weight. She came to us as a stray, and is a bit too thin. She is a really sweet dog who is a bit timid with you. She absolutely wants attention, but doesn't have much confidence in herself. She will stay right next to you and lean against you - all in the hope that you will love and pet her. She is definitely social and wants to be around people. She is good with the other dogs and enjoys playing with them. She nicely takes treats and allows us to take her food bowl away. She did not react to being pinched or having her tail pulled. She is fairly calm. She enjoys walks and does pretty well on the leash. She is well mannered inside, and will keep off the furniture. She loves to just lay at your feet. When Gem first arrived, she appeared to be in good health. However, it was noticed that she never held her tail up. We took her to the Vet to have this checked, and found the her tail had separated from her spine as the result of being shot with buck shot at some point in her life. The Vet amputated her tail, which has totally healed now. She also has some nerve damage which keeps her from having any feeling in her tail, which has resulted in the risk of leakage since her anus is not tightly closed. In her foster home, she was put on WD, a special food, which gives her good solid stools. This has helped her out. Her foster Mom indicates that since Gem has been in the house, she has shown good control and only had two accidents in 4 weeks. When she sleeps in her crate, she does lose some control and will pass a solid stool (something that is easy to clean). She does not have any liquid leakage. We know that this issue will take some extra care, but we truly feel Gem is worth it. She is such a sweet, loving dog with a gentle soul. She deserves a chance at a loving home where she'll plenty of love and attention. Please consider adopting her.

Hi, my name is Charlie.
I was abandoned at a doggie park in San Luis Obispo, on the central coast of California, 3 years ago.
I weighed under 30 pounds, had fleas, mites, and worms, and it was apparent I had been abused in my former residence. It was raining and I was wet, muddy, cold, and scared. My back legs were so weak I couldn't stand up for very long.
For the last three years, I've had a great life because my new patient and loving dad took such good care of me. I got very close to my dad and we were best of friends. He loved me a lot and made sure I got my biscuit treats and my taste of bologna every evening after my dinner. Sadly, my favorite dad got ill and died in June, and now I no longer sleep against him and hold paws, or take care of him in the middle of the night, or have midnight snacks with him.
I subsequently got neutered, received all the proper vaccinations, and was relieved of all the bugs I had. But, I have not been able to rid myself of all the ‘ghosts’ I have following me.
Over the next 3 years, I became really healthy and put on my proper weight. I’m very active and hyper and love to play with my toys. I really love to run and my favorite routine is going to a park and chasing my tennis ball. My dad always made sure I went in the car everywhere with him. I love to go for long walks and enjoy nature.
I would do great where there are adults to command me and lots of space where I can run. Although, I do like to be inside and I am terrifically housebroken. I sleep all night without going out and I’ve never had an accident in the house.
I don't like small children or small dogs. If another dog invades my space, or looks menacingly at me, I tend to fight. I jump up on people, including those in my household, and sometimes even nip at people if I get anxious or agitated. I need training, since I am out of control now. I can't be trusted to be in an open area without a leash on.
Also, I may have the onset of epilepsy, as I sometimes have seizures and start drooling and tightening up. The vet says it can be controlled with medicine if it starts to get worse.
I really need to find a new home of the right fit. If you could help, I would be a really good friend.

Houston,TX: Toby is a sweet-natured 10-year-old Bichon Frise whose mom had to go into a nursing home and couldn't take him with her.  He is blind and deaf.  He's happy with his food dish, a little bit of sun in the fenced back yard and a place on the bed at night.  He's very appreciative of a good cuddle now and then too.  If you would like to give a home to Toby, he can be found at www.smallpawsrescue.org.     Sandra.Rausch@bgllp.com

Murphy is a smart, affectionate 2 year old who was taken by recently by his owners to a city shelter.  He's got lots of energy and personality and he loves to learn new tricks - he knows how to lay down, roll over and give paw.  He loves This small 22 pound boy is also a special needs cocker - he has a condition called mega esophagus.  This means his esophagus  muscles have lost tone so he has special feeding requirements.  Murphy needs 3 small meals per day. He should be fed canned dog food rolled into small meatballs and his food bowl needs to be elevated. After he finishes eating, he needs to be held upright so that he's standing on his back legs for about 10 minutes. We've spoken to several vets who have said, that with proper care, their patients with mega esophagus have good quality of life and can live a normal life span. The city shelter is full and we know it won't be easy to find a special caregiver for Murphy but we just have to try. Since we can't put Murphy in a small kennel as a short term solution we're searching for an experienced foster or permanent home for him as soon as possible. For more information, please call 603-547-3363 and we'll call you right back or email rdefeo@sbcglobal.net

Update 8/8/07

Murphy's temporary foster mom reports that he's very happy to be out of the city shelter and he's adjusting very well - he even likes the 3 bossy female cockers who also live there!  His foster mom says he has a great personality, is friendly and just loves his ball and other toys.  She also reports that his feeding requirements are easy to manage. She simply softens several cups of dry dog food with water until it's mushy, then she purees it in a blender.  He gets about half a cup of the blended food placed on a 9 inch high stool.  He was famished when he first arrived last Friday so she's been feeding him 6 small meals a day but he's now more relaxed about getting his food and she plans to work him down to 3 meals a day.

Murphy just loves being outside in the big fenced yard.  We're hoping there's a special person just waiting for this happy boy.

Sammy is looking for a special person to love, play & care for him. Sam is 5 years young, has a beautiful black and tan coat and the cutest
perky ears, Sam is a people lover and would enjoy a laid back adult lifestyle peppered with car rides and strolls. The lad has a pancreas
insufficiency & arthritis which both are controlled with meds. The extra cost to care for a pet is the main reason this sweet kiddo has not been
adopted. It is going to take a real doggie lover to care for Sam, but we know you have been looking for a special critter that deserves your love

Hi I am Anahi....I am a 10-11 year old Akita. I am VERY VERY friendly. I give kisses and also give you my paw. I love other dogs and children but no cats please.... I am spayed, up to date on my shots, microchipped and house broken. However, I recently have had some urinary incontinence problems. I am currently on medication and am no longer incontinent. other than that I am very healthy. Everyone who meets me says I am like a giant teddy bear.I weigh 115 lbs. I was pulled from a local shelter  the day before euthanasia by a private individual who is hoping to find me my forever home.  You can contact her via phone 323.573.5172 or by e-mail at queentina@pacbell.net. her name is Tina

Shay is a sweet, loving, friendly puppy who is looking for his forever home. This beautiful 25 pound Corgi-Welsh Cardigan mix (our vet's best guess) has had a rough start, however, he still loves to meet new people. Shay was rescued up in Dulce, NM after being hit by cars three times. He did not receive any vet care for his injuries, and so he now runs and plays on three legs. Shay has seen the vet in Santa Fe for all his shots and a check up. He loves people (including children) and dogs, is very respectful of cats, and would be happy in a home with other dog companions. Please call Karen and John at 505-983-1735 if you or someone you know can be Shay's family. John Verheul <john@jbvcoaching.com> posted 6-07

Recently we discovered that our beloved dog Ranger, an 12-month old Bluetick Coonhound/Black Lab has a pelvic bladder and a sphincter muscle problem. He is incontinent and will be for life. We have been searching around our homestate, Connecticut, to find a home for him because he is not responding to the only medication that could help and we are forced to keep him crated when we are not around and when the outside weather is not cooperating. He is unaware of his incontinence and really has no bladder control. We sent out e-mails to all of the shelters in the state and other rescue places, asking them to get the word out about Ranger's availability in the hopes we could find him a suitable home.  Because of his incontinence we don't want him stuck in a kennel so we aren't looking for a shelter to take him in. People have suggested diapers, but these would not make for a suitable fix because of the volume of urine that is beginning to leak out from him.  We are basically grabbing for straws trying to find him a place, because the only other option is to have him put down. He is a wonderful dog, very
loving and loyal, very playful, and good around horses and other dogs. It is so hard to have to write all of this and to continue to look for another home for him, just because it means giving him away, we know that him having a life somewhere where he could be outdoors for all of the time, or at least somewhere where his incontinence wouldn't be a problem, is better than him having no life at all. This is a very urgent matter and I would ask that you please respond by tomorrow, May 30, if you know of a suitable situation.  We have looked for over a month for another home for him but this problem is taking its toll on all of us and we cannot keep this up because it is not fair to any of us.
